Melasma is characterized by diffuse pigment on the face and can be difficult to treat. The condition is caused by hormonal changes in the body such as those caused by pregnancy, birth control pills, and menopause. (It is often called the “mask of pregnancy” because of the mask-like appearance it creates.) Melasma is worsened with exposure to the sun and heat. However, it can be treated effectively with regular skin care and in-office treatments, such as the VI Peel or one of our alternative treatments and an individualized skin care plan.
